The sauna

Yesterday we spent a cold morning in a forest watching forest machines harvesting wood. Students were learning to drive the machines. Later we visited a technical high school we saw electrical, mecanical, joinery and carpentry work shops and we ate a typical Finnish lunch that was made by catering students - it was delicious. Just two hours later some of us ate supper.

That evening we went to a traditional farm for a smoke sauna. We can say nobody liked the idea of jumping in an icy lake but we all did!

First we walked through the snow to the lake where we could see a hole in the ice with candles to see the way. Then we got undressed and went in the sauna. we threw water on the hot stones to make steam. When we were ready, we ran to the lake and dipped in the cold water (2degrees). Then we sat in a outdoor hot tub (39 degrees) and we started again...

It was amazing, a wonderful experience.

In true tradition we finished the evening with grilled saucages and beer.
